Statement of Congresswoman Betty Sutton on Passage of H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007
Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton commented on the bipartisan passage of H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007. The House passed the bill 237-180.
"H.R. 1592 provides much-needed support for local law enforcement agencies in the fight against violent hate crimes. Hate crimes involve the purposeful selection of victims for violence and intimidation based on bias against their perceived attributes. These crimes are distinguished from, and go far beyond, mere expression of belief. This sends a strong message that hate crimes are unacceptable in our society."
